The Locum Club Team
Derek Thomas
Derek’s CV spans over thirty years in personnel and career management. A successful 24-year career in the RAF saw him rise to a senior management position, serving at units both in the UK and abroad including the Gulf, Falklands, Belize, Cyprus and the Netherlands.
October 2003 saw a sea-change in Derek’s career, when he left the Forces to join NHS Borders in the SE of Scotland based at Borders General Hospital, Melrose as Medical Staffing Manager. The experience Derek accumulated during his time in the RAF made him ideally placed to rise to the challenges of his new role, and he implemented major changes to the hospital’s working practices. In April 2005, Derek was appointed Head of Medical Staffing at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, a position which he held until November 2009 when he established The Locum Club with Simon Holt. Derek and Simon go back 25 years when they met at Princess Alexandra's Hospital RAF Wroughton. Simon was in the Royal Army Medical Corps and is a former Medical Student who has built up an impressive medical recruitment portfolio. Their friendship had continued over the years and they are now combining Simon's business acumen with Derek's intimate knowledge of the NHS and medical recruitment to form The Locum Club..
During his time at the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, Derek helped turn around the fortunes of a medical staffing department under intense pressure – click here to read a reference from Dr Valerie Suarez, Consultant Histopathologist at Mid Staffordshire NHS FT who worked closely with Derek in her capacity as Medical Director.
REFERENCE: Dr Valerie Suarez, Consultant Histopathologist, Mid Staffordshire NHS FT, 25th August 2009
"I have known Derek in his capacity as Head of Medical Staffing from when he joined Mid-Staffordshire NHS FT Hospitals in April 2005. I became Medical Director in 2006 and worked much more closely with him until I stepped down from the role to concentrate on my specialty, Histopathology, in April this year.
"Derek inherited a run down, poorly led and poorly staffed department and quickly raised the profile and reputation of Medical Staffing in the Trust. This was due to his unquestionable organisational skills but also due to his drive and commitment. Junior doctors rely on him to sort their problems out and the consultant body has a high regard for his skills and his knowledge.
"He has built up the Medical Staffing Department in the relatively short time he has been in post to a highly regarded and efficient unit. He has been successful in increasing the staffing levels at a time when all new posts are subject to rigorous scrutiny as the financial climate continues to be extremely constrained. It is a testament to his abilities that he was recently asked to take on the task of overseeing all recruitment in the Trust in addition to all the medical recruitment.
"During my tenure as Medical Director Modernising Medical Careers was introduced: this gave all Acute Trusts a huge challenge to fill junior doctor posts with appropriate experience in a very short time span. Derek managed the process on behalf of the Trust superbly, unflappable and professionally, (supporting the Deanery too) so that the service to patients was unaffected. This was a commendable achievement and one of the best managed in the Region.
"Derek operates an Open Door policy which has the effect of nipping potential problems in the bud. He is also keen to accept new challenges, especially when he can see a benefit or improvement to be had and will pursue these 'alongside the day job' even if this puts added pressure or workload on himself. He is well known and respected at all levels throughout the Trust and is also clearly comfortable at all levels, whether it be presentations to Trust Board, rounding up doctors or supporting junior members of staff.
"He has an exceptionally organised approach to his work. Deadlines are never missed, his attention to detail is meticulous and he will always give 110%. I enjoyed working with him very much and appreciated his support and his humour! He is very straightforward and will not flinch from confronting poor performance. However he also shows compassion and has regard for the individual while operating within the rules which he understands well and applies fairly.
"I would have no hesitation in recommending Derek for a project management / consultancy role, especially in the field of Medical Staffing, in any organisation. He has a wealth of experience and has built up personal contacts outside our organisation which will be available to him after he has left us at Mid Staffs.
"His open and helpful approach - definitely a 'can do' attitude - lifts the spirit and creates an atmosphere of positivity that is hard to describe and will be even harder to replace. I know my consultant colleagues will be truly sorry to lose him as will I and the organisation will find it very difficult to find a successor. On a personal note, I genuinely wish him every success for the future."
